2017 Benefits Benchmarking Survey

ERIs 2017 Benefits Benchmarking Survey analyzes benefit information by sector, industry, region, and organization size. The survey was revised for 2017 to include paid leave, retirement, life and disability insurance, and executive perquisites in addition to health care benefits such as medical, prescription drugs, dental, and vision. Benefits data effective January 1, 2017 was provided by 71 respondents representing over 107,000 employees. Data for 70 medical plans and 69 dental plans in the United States was collected. The report provides a timely baseline for employers wishing to benchmark the costs of their health plans and other benefits practices with other employers. This is the tenth annual benchmarking survey published by ERI Salary Surveys. It provides current data that may be used to identify trends in costs for health care coverage and other benefits so that informed decisions may be made for effective benefits management.

  • North Central – 27%
  • Southeast – 21%
  • South Central – 13%
  • West Coast – 13%
Types of medical plans offered in the United States are as follows:
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) – 43%
  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) – 11%
  • Point of Service (POS) – 8%
  • Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) – 3%
  • High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) – 35%
Types of dental plans offered in the United States are as follows:
  • Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO) – 73%
  • Dental Maintenance Organization (DHMO) – 13%
  • Dental Point of Service (DPOS) – 4%
  • Dental Exclusive Provider Organization (DEPO) – 1%
  • Dental Discount – 2%
  • Reimbursement – 1%
  • Dental Indemnity – 5%
